This year, the winter school holidays have been extended to accommodate the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, so your kids will have more than enough time on their hands to gain some knowledge while they’re on a break. Children in grade 6 and grade 12 Life Science students can take advantage of two fantastic courses being offered by the Aquarium’s Environmental Education Centre during the 2010 winter school holidays.
The Junior Biologist Course for grade 6 students is tailor-made for youngsters who show an interest in marine and other natural sciences. During the course, participating tykes will develop social and leadership skills while being taught about the underwater world through specially equipped laboratories at the Discovery Centre.
This course runs from 21 to 23 and 28 to 30 June from 09h00 to 15h00. Applications close on 9 June, and costs are R300 or R420 (which includes Shoreline Café meals).
For teenagers who are about to embark on the next phase of their lives – post-high-school life – there is one more hurdle to navigate: the finals. For them, the Education Centre has developed the Grade 12 Life Sciences Winter School. This thorough revision programme seeks to explain the curriculum to matric pupils while solidifying the knowledge they’ve gathered over the years.
This course runs from 21 to 25 June from 08h30 to 16h00. Applications close on 15 June and course costs R1 000 for 30 hours of quality enrichment.
Space is limited and only the first 50 applicants per course will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Email the Environmental Education Centre or call 021 418 3823 for more information and to make a booking.
