Since the launch of Nelson Mandela International Day on Madiba’s birthday (18 July) in 2009 ordinary people and big corporates dedicate not only their time but also money to a number of worthy causes to celebrate this special day.
This year is no different and again people are urged to give up their time to a worthy cause. The Two Oceans Aquarium is big on conservation and education, and we have some ideas on how you can get involved this year.
Sponsor a visit to the Aquarium
There are thousands of children in Cape Town who live close to the beach but have never visited it, let alone an Aquarium, to experience the wonders of the sea. This year all that can change for one child or more if you choose to sponsor a visit to the Aquarium. The visits are hosted by our highly trained staff and offer interactive activities.
Beach clean-up
Mandela Day does not have to be a one-day event only. You can help make every day Mandela Day this coming September. To celebrate International Coastal Clean-up Day every year in September, we help clean up beaches around Cape Town. This year we are doing it again, and as always, we would be appreciative of a little help. To commit to our beach clean-up you can sign up now by sending us an email today.
Organise a visit by the Aquarium outreach vehicle
Oceans in Motion is the Aquarium’s social programme aimed at underprivileged schools around Cape Town that cannot afford a visit to the Aquarium. Through Oceans in Motion our fully equipped mobile aquarium offers students – up to 200 at a time the opportunity to interact with live sea animals.
Donate to our conservation programme
When people visit the Aquarium they get to experience our inspiring exhibits, but behind the scenes we are also involved in a number of conservation and research programmes that rely purely on sponsorships and donations from the public for funding.
By donating to our outreach programmes you will be making sure that we continue to tag and release ragged-tooth sharks every two years for research purposes, cut fishing lines from the necks of seals, rehabilitate sea turtles and so much more.
You can sponsor a child’s visit or make a donation to our outreach programmes by visiting our online shop.
