Flickr pic of the day: Spiny starfish

Spiny starfish are common on the rocky shores of the Western Cape. They are usually orange or blue-grey in colour. Starfish are fascinating sea creatures and you will find a multitude of them at the Aquarium.

According to Wikipedia the starfish’s spines are surrounded by pedicellariae, small wrench- or claw-shaped structures, which are thought to keep the body surface clear of algae, encrusting organisms and other debris.
