Young Biologist Course (27 September to 2 October)
A total of 55 Grade 10s from all over Cape Town, as well as one student from Citrusdal and one from Pretoria, will take part in the next Young Biologist Course, which runs from 27 September to 2 October at the Aquarium.
We are looking forward to a crammed week, full of activities and lots of learning.
End of the latest volunteer programme
On 11 September, the training of our 27th volunteer group came to an end. We look forward to welcoming all of our new volunteers to help out at the Aquarium!
Climate change workshop
Due to the teachers’ strike, our workshop with four of five Khayelitsha-based schools for the month of September had to be postponed. We are happy to announce, however, that teacher Khonzani Lembeni will be continuing with his workshop on 20 September.
What’s in store for these young learners?
At these workshops, the Aquarium and the City of Cape Town help young children get to grips with climate change. Three hundred learners from underprivileged schools will be sponsored by the City of Cape Town and transported by Golden Arrow buses for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Our experienced environmental educators will meet the students at their various Khayelitsha-based schools, at which point they’re taken to a beach to observe the sea level. Students are then taken to a nature reserve where they are shown the potential results of a flood due to a rapid rise in sea level, after which they are driven along Baden Powel Drive, an area that would be greatly affected by such a change.
Once at the Aquarium, learners experiment with thermometers and ice, further learning about the effects of global warming. A similar Aquarium programme will be sponsored by the City of Cape Town in celebration of Marine Week in October.
