August is Women’s Month, and the Two Oceans Aquarium recently played host to a great night out. Friday 12 August saw 180 guests instructed in the art of dance, particularly pole dancing. And it all happened in front of our I&J Predator Exhibit.

“We needed a unique and exciting venue that would help make our event memorable and enjoyable,” says Sam Austen of Pole Dance Cape Town, a franchise of BodyMind Studios, which hosted the workshop. “The I&J Predator Exhibit provided us with the spectacular shark exhibit, which we used as a backdrop to our performance area. This certainly made our event more spectacular and memorable!”
Guests were awed by the displays from the sharks and the performers.
“Everyone seemed to be extremely impressed by the strength of the performers, who all look like your average women, but are able to hold themselves on the pole in various acrobatic poses. I’m sure the sharks even slowed down to take a look! The performances, together with the venue, created an entertaining evening enjoyed by all,” says Sam.
Pole Dance Cape Town started operating in February 2010. Those interested can learn the skill at its larger studio in Loop Street, which has 11 poles; men and women get a workout here from Mondays to Saturdays, mornings and evenings. It caters to all sorts: young and old, male and female. Says Sam: “Pole dancing is suitable for all fitness levels, sizes, and ages [our oldest student is 63 years old!].”
There are still, however, misconceptions about pole dancing – mainly that it’s a sleazy activity. Sam says: “Exotic pole dancing is only one of the many styles of pole dancing. There is no stripping involved in our classes, and we teach various styles of pole dancing, mostly acrobatic but we also incorporate burlesque, contemporary dance and hip hop into our routines.
“Pole dancing has an extremely positive effect on one’s health, both physically and emotionally. It is a great way to lose weight and to improve flexibility and coordination. It targets abdominals, shoulders, arms and back, and helps build lean muscle.” So, a fun way to get fit.
Sam further elaborated on how successful the event was. “The Two Oceans Aquarium is without a doubt a unique and unforgettable venue for smaller events such as ours. The staff were all very helpful and I would definitely recommend it as a venue.”
