Coastal Cleanup at Sunset Beach

Do your bit tomorrow and help clean up our beaches

Don’t forget tomorrow is International Coastal Cleanup Day, when volunteers all over the world make a concerted effort to gather up rubbish from shorelines, waterways and oceans.

This event – started in 1986 by the American Centre for Marine Conservation in Texas – has been held internationally for more than 20 years. In 2011 around 500 000 volunteers in more than 100 countries collected four-million kilograms of litter, including the main offenders, cigarette butts, bottle caps and lids, plastic bottles and plastic bags. Reducing marine pollution is one of our greatest challenges today, since it poses a threat not only to the oceans of the world but to the myriad animals that live there.

In support of worldwide coastal cleanup efforts, the Two Oceans Aquarium will host this annual event at Sunset Beach in collaboration with Plastics SA, Transnet and the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative.

Join us tomorrow from 9am to 12 noon at Forata Drive, Sunset Beach to do your bit to keep our Cape beaches clean. We will provide gloves, bags and data collection sheets.

Please email Katja Rockstroh on Katja.Rockstroh@aquarium.co.za if you plan to join us.
