The Two Oceans Aquarium will co-ordinate a beach clean up on Mouille Point Beach on Sunday 19 September 2004 at 09:00 at the Lighthouse. The public is invited to help clean the beach and scuba divers are encouraged to participate and collect rubbish off the ocean floor.
Divers will receive a diving clean up bag/net and land-cleaners will be supplied with a pair of gloves and plastic bags to collect the rubbish. The oceans, rivers and lagoons and their inhabitants are fighting for survival as a result of waste from human activities. Waste/pollution comes in many forms eg chemical waste, sewage, plastic, metal, paper, fishing line, packaging bands etc.
The International Coastal Cleanup Project was initiated in 1986 and over ninety countries have volunteered to clean the beaches and coastlines within their surroundings. The mission of the Cleanup includes the following: to remove debris from the shorelines, waterways and beaches of the world’s lakes, rivers and oceans; to collect valuable information on the amount and type of debris; to educate people on the issue of marine debris and finally to use the information collected from the Cleanup to effect positive changes on all levels. Many fish, animals, plants and birds are on the endangered species list and their fight for survival is tested everyday. If everyone was more considerate about littering, then these animals would have a better chance of surviving.
The Two Oceans Aquarium appeals to the public to recycle as much as possible. Most containers, bottles, bags, metal, paper, plastic, rubber etc can be recycled and this alone will minimize the amount of litter found along beaches and in rivers, lakes, lagoons etc.
The Two Oceans Aquarium urges the public to help keep Cape Town’s beaches beautiful to be proud of our natural heritage.
