There have been exciting new developments for the 2014 Thrive EnviroQuiz/Art competition for schools in the southern Peninsula, which launches this week.

Thrive is a Hout Bay organisation that strives to unite people through environmental awareness and action projects. This year the Two Oceans Aquarium has joined Sentinel News in promoting the competition, which will focus on the Ocean, Hout Bay “beyond the waves”.

“We want to bring the learners’ and community’s attention to the threat that man is creating through our ignorance, as well as to the importance and potential of our ocean,” says Bronwen Lankers-Byrne, founding director of Thrive and co-ordinator of the EnviroQuiz/Art competition.

Camps Bay High and Preparatory schools have also entered the competition this year, bringing the number of competing schools to 12. Russell Stephens, head of the Environmental Education Centre, and his team at the Two Oceans Aquarium will be the quiz designers and judges of the competition.

Schools have received a booklet from the Aquarium and will receive the six Sentinel News articles with questions and answers. These will form the basis of the learning material for the live EnviroQuiz, to be held at Kronendal School on Friday June 6.

Sentinel News will sponsor the prize money of R15 000, along with refreshments for the participating teams and spectators. In the art section, there will be a number of prizes for outstanding individual exhibits and there will be junior and senior prizes for the schools that submit the most exceptional artworks overall.

The chief judge will be Lissa Claassens, who will be looking for creative use of materials, as well as whether there is a strong message about saving our seas.

Waste materials, with some beach litter, may be manipulated and painted using “new” products such as glue, paint and nails. Entry forms for both the art competition and the EnviroQuiz have already been distributed to the participating schools.
