Our Environmental Education Centre is now accepting applications for three of its mid-year holiday enrichment courses for grade 8s, 9s, and 11s and 12s.

For grade 8s

Marine Sciences Academy 103: Marine Science Discoverer

A free, introductory course to marine biology and marine careers, this course is ideally suited for grade 8s who have an interest in marine life and science and who are considering this as a career path. The course runs over five days, covering various aspects of the oceans, with a few animal examples added to the mix. We ensure that the course is as hands-on as possible, with various activities and outings included.

To apply, please contact Katja Laingui on education@aquarium.co.za for application forms or call 021 814 4555 for more information.

  • Course dates: 3 to 7 July 2017
  • Application deadline: 9 June 2017
  • For grade 9s

Marine Sciences Academy 104: Marine Science Explorer

The Marine Sciences Explorer course introduces students to some basic principles of oceanography, ecology and marine biology. Theory mixed with hands-on activities will specifically expose students to marine research and the scientific method. This approach to marine sciences seeks to guide grade 9s in their choice of grade 10 subjects and to assist those keen on pursuing a career in this field.

To apply, please contact Katja Laingui on education@aquarium.co.za for application forms or call 021 814 4555 for more information.

  • Course dates: 17 to 21 July 2017
  • Application deadline: 23 June 2017

For grades 11 and 12

Marine Sciences Academy 301 and 302: Oceanography and Zoology

The high school Life Science and Physical Science curricula may provide a broad base in many aspects of these sciences, but leave students wishing to go on to tertiary studies in marine biology and oceanography with a very poor foundation in these topics. Our Zoology and Oceanography courses seek to bridge this gap.

The course is being offered to grade 11s and 12s who show a keen interest in marine sciences and who may wish to pursue a career in this field. The purpose of this course is to provide important basic principles and terminology in the marine sciences, while also adding to their existing knowledge in the Physical Science and Life Science. Students who are accepted to the Zoology Course, happening mid-year, are automatically accepted for the Oceanography course, taking place early in December. Students need to do both parts to get the full benefit of this course.

Examples of course content include:

  • Introduction to oceanography
  • Ocean geology
  • Ocean chemistry
  • Classification and characteristics of major marine phyla
  • Levels of organisation in living organisms
  • Comparative life processes and physiology

While many of our candidates may not go on to pursue a career in marine science, they leave our Marine Sciences Academy proudly ocean-literate and able to contribute positive actions towards the wellbeing of our the ocean.
