Applications for our second Smart Living course, coming up in August/September, are now open! This course is aimed at grade 7s with an interest in sustainability and conservation.

Sponsored by the City of Cape Town, the aim of this course is to encourage children to start thinking about their impact on the environment and to inspire them to take positive action for a sustainable future. Kids will learn about our biodiversity and why it is important, and how to save water, reduce waste and conserve energy.

The lessons echo the interactive games that form part of the Aquarium’s Smart Living Challenge Zone. Launched in December 2015, this state of the art exhibit was developed in conjunction with the City of Cape Town and interactive-design lab Formula D.

The Smart Living Challenge Zone was created to instill essential sustainability lessons in the hearts and minds of young and old. From planning energy resources for a growing city, to maintaining a healthy biodiversity in a virtual park, visitors can see how their choices impact the world around them.

The Smart Living course takes these games into the classroom and out into the field, immersing the young participants in the science of sustainability. While this course is not strictly a marine-themed course, the importance of understanding nature, its processes and how we affect them, is an important stepping stone towards any potential career in the sciences.
