A very special kind of Reef

Kim Stephens – Sponsorship Coordinator for the Two Oceans Aquarium

Reef is one of those brands synonymous with the Two Oceans Aquarium.

As a founding partner it has supplied, fixed or replaced our wetsuits and dive gear for many years. It has partnered with us in our dive programme, equipping many locals and tourists with the required wetsuits as they experience the wonder of learning to dive, or spending time with our ragged-tooth sharks and other wonderful marine animals in guided dive experiences.

In more recent months, Reef agreed to further its partnership with the Aquarium by sponsoring the visit of an under-resourced school. As I’ve said in Aquarium blogs before, this is where so much of the magic happens.

Yellowwood Primary School, from Mitchells Plain in Cape Town, benefited from Reef’s generosity. The Grade 7 learners were treated to the full educational experience courtesy of the Aquarium’s passionate team of teachers. Bused in by Golden Arrow Bus Services, the group settled into one of the specially fitted classrooms, complete with Smart Board and mini-aquariums on each of the desks. They learned about the rocky shore, the importance of biodiversity in our oceans, and how to conserve and sustain marine life.

The eager group of learners then experienced a full tour of the Two Oceans Aquarium, where their classroom lesson came to life amid the colourful exhibits.

Statistics indicate that children from under-resourced communities seldom experience the ocean. Enabling this experience through corporate sponsorship is both life-changing and inspirational for young minds.

Thank you, Reef, for your long-term support of the Two Oceans Aquarium, and for enabling this group to experience underwater magic with us.

You can sponsor a disadvantaged child’s visit to the Aquarium directly from our online shop.
